My fantasy version Hobart railway map

Description

This is my Hobart railway map if it did not have NIMBY'S (Not in my Backyard people), bad politicians and poor planners in the first place. So please no nasty comments!!

For starters, we all know that Hobart is Tasmania's capital. Sadly, Hobart is the worst railway public transport city in all of Australia (maybe the world). They have no passenger rail of any kind (light rail, long distance rail etc.) and it's been exactly 40 years to this day they last had a passenger train. And to rub salt into the wounds, Hobart railway station was sadly demolished and replaced with the ABC TV/Radio studios. Many Tasmanians these days are so anti-rail, so I'll try my best not to offend anyone.

To start off with, the Northern Suburbs railway would be the first line converted into light rail. It commences at Brighton, then crosses over the Bridgewater Bridge before going through the main northern suburbs including Claremont, Rosetta, Glenorchy and Moonah. It will then go to Macquarie Point before heading underground into the Hobart CBD. The second line commences at Geilston Bay then crosses over the Derwent River next to the Tasman Bridge before going through Hobart CBD then heading into Sandy Bay. The third line commences at Howrah then heads to Bellerive which includes a stop at the famous Bluntstone Arena sports ground. Going underground at Hobart CBD before continuing down the freeway to Kingston and Blackmans Bay.

There is also a Hobart Airport Express Bus which provides fast buses to and from Hobart Airport with a few stops along the freeway.

So feel free to enjoy!

Hi from Launceston. I'm not sure if my city is really ready for passenger rail for a few reasons, but I think it would be awesome to see some passenger rail transit in Hobart at least!

I'm not sure how feasible the Sandy Bay and Kingston lines would be, but a passenger line from Brighton or at the very least Claremont into the CBD seems so obvious. The track is already right there and goes straight through heavily populated suburbs like Glenorchy and Moonah, plus would be good for visitors as it goes right by MONA, the Botanical Gardens and other popular destinations.

You also mention that it could go underground into the CBD, but would that even be necessary? Macquarie Point is easily within walking distance of the CBD and just seems like a natural start/end point.

Admittedly I've only very recently taken a keen interest in the topic of public transit and urban planning, so I'm by no means an expert on this stuff, but to me it looks like a passenger rail line going through the northern suburbs is a great idea.

I also like the idea of an express bus from the airport into the city.

But on the topic of rail, is there a reason why many Tasmanians are opposed to such ideas? Is there a history behind that stigma? Thanks!
